Social Impact of Energy Transition

India’s transition towards Viksit Bharat 2047 and Net Zero 2070 is one of the largest and most complicated transitions of the 21 st century because of its potential ramifications for those engaged directly and indirectly with India’s coal economy, which forms a source of livelihood, existence and identity.

Further, any net-zero transition by 2070 with a climate mitigation and adaptation goal within the Viksit Bharat context—from coal to renewables and for the respective demand sectors through adoption of cleaner energy sources, cleaner energy appliances, choices, and products—must be cognisant of the vast socio-economic, psychological, and spatial impacts of this transition on the people involved.

The transition must be equitable for every segment of society by ensuring that questions of distributive, procedural, recognition justice, identity, and capability frameworks of those segments are well-addressed. This forms the basis of the Social Impacts of Energy Transition vertical.

At ACPET, we envision an equitable and inclusive energy transition that protects vulnerable communities and improves their life, health, and livelihoods.

Vision
To ensure that India’s energy transition is equitable, inclusive, and sustainable, safeguarding the dignity and livelihoods of vulnerable communities while achieving India’s growth and energy security goals.

Objective

To generate actionable evidence, frameworks, and policy pathways that integrate social equity and livelihood resilience into energy transition strategies.

Our strategic pillars include the creation of -

  • Evaluation frameworks for the effective management of socio-economic trade-offs of decarbonization strategies.
  • Vulnerability indexes to be institutionalized in energy transition planning.
  • Assessing and embedding health and livelihood co-benefits derived from climate mitigation policies.
